James’ family is unique in this context as the family kept a record of births and deaths back to the mid 19th century in their family bible. I know from the family that they lived in Ince-in-Makerfield and I know from the BMD index that James’ father John was married in St Mary in Ince and his father James was married in Christ Church. Presumably all their children were also baptised in these two local churches. Unfortunately, the parish clerks records for these two churches are not available online on the otherwise excellent Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project.
James’ mother Hannah Fillingham’s is not really covered in the above mentioned family bible and thus we know very little about her yet. There is also an odd discrepancy surrounding her name. In the Cunliffe family bible she is named as Hannah. John’s family have told me that she is a Fillingham. Other Fillinghams are also mentioned in the Cunliffe bible so a close connection is likely. However, when looking up her marriage to John Cunliffe in 1908 in the BMD index she is Annie Fillingham. Again case of getting the marriage certificate in order to sort this out.
