Image usage

Re-blogging our images/illustrations

Illustrations of John’s are added to Grey Duckling with a copyright notice on. You are more than welcome to post any image on your own blog as long as you credit John and link to the Grey Duckling page where you found the image. However, please refrain from reworking or using any image from Grey Duckling for any other purposes.

If you do re-blog any of our photos we would love it if you would comment about it on the page where you found it. We have obviously put the pictures on the Internet for promotional purposes and as long as you use them as such you don’t need to ask permission. But we would still love to hear from you. We may even want to follow your blog!

Remember that this also goes for images that you choose to share on Pinterest,  Tumblr, Facebook or other social sharing sites. Stick to the golden rule of crediting and linking back to the original source.

Image disclaimer:

At Grey Duckling we try to only use images in our blog-posts that we have either taken ourselves or have permission to use. This includes images shared on Wikimedia Commons or Flickr Commons and images licenses under a Creative Commons shared image license. We always credit images and link back to where we found them, unless  of course we have taken them ourselves.

The only exception to this is if we wish to promote your product or project. In these cases the images are credited and will be accompanied by a link to the product/project website/blog. In this case we will try and make an effort to contact you either by email or in a comment on your blog – mostly to let you know that we love your work and we want to shout about it from the rooftops.

This is an issue that we care deeply about and therefore we would like to make this disclaimer. We are not bad people – we are actually pretty nice. So if you find that we have used an image for which you have the copyright and we haven’t credited it properly or linked it back to the appropriate source, please let us know (in a nice way) and we will do our best to rectify this. We promise that we will never intentionally try to pass on your image as our own.

But we also want you to realise what a fantastic thing blogging is and how sharing your images on blogs can do wonders in terms of promoting your business or product. And it is our general starting point that you originally posted the image on the internet because you wanted to promote something or just share it. If not, then you should probably try and keep the image behind lock and key on Flickr, Facebook or on a private (password protected) blog.

This is an issue that has been wonderfully covered by Susan and William Brinson in this design*sponge post about photo usage.

Frederique Morrel is also a great inspiration in terms of how best to promote your product through sharing images.  He has added a section to his website where he  makes higher resolution (minimum 500 pixels wide) images available for some of  his  products.Have a look at Frederique Morrel’s website under the header: Visuals -> High-res Images or have a look at the screenshot below.
Also while you are there – have a look at the wonderful stuff he makes!
